Saru could oust play-offs

There are times when the Blue Bulls’ hackneyed philosophy of “week by week” becomes rather numbing.

Yet in a way the approach might prove particularly useful as they prepare for a vital clash with the Lions at Ellis Park this weekend.

The previous meeting between the neighbours ended in a chastening 62-23 Currie Cup defeat at Loftus for Pine Pienaar’s men not the type of memory you want to dwell on too much.

“The way you approach a fixture like this one is quite easy,” admitted Bulls captain Jono Ross.

“We haven’t forgotten what happened that day but it’s rather been an experience where we’ve tried to absorb the lessons learnt.”

What can’t be denied though is their uncomfortable fifth place on the log. Stung into action, the Bull coach made numerous changes largely of the more experienced kind.

Bjorn Basson returns on the left-wing, Wilhelm Steenkamp pops up in the second row again as does Werner Kruger in the front and Bandise Maku, above, makes his first start since returning from a stint with the Kings.
