Cheslin Kolbe is fast becoming the new darling of Newlands.

The diminutive left-wing of Western Province was sensational in his team’s 25-19 Currie Cup win over the Sharks at Newlands on Saturday, scoring the second try, while an earlier effort was denied by inches when his foot touched the white chalk.

Fullback Gio Aplon was even better with Province running in a 15-0 halftime lead, demolishing the Sharks at scrum-time and suffocating them with their defence.

The Sharks only managed to get on the scoreboard in the 56th minute, but Province’s second half lapse again denied them a bonus point while allowing the Sharks to get theirs.

Aplon scored a brilliant try with 20 minutes to go to ensure a 25-5 lead, but then they fell into their winter sleep with the Durbanites coming back strongly.

“We were very disappointed losing out on the four-try bonus point, but we were glad to get the win,” said Province skipper Deon Fourie who had to leave the field late in the game with a rib injury.

“We allowed them back in the game and it was also frustrating to let them in for their bonus point,” said Fourie.

The Sharks, who lost lock Marco Wentzel with a suspected dislocated shoulder, were forced to play catch-up the entire game where their scrums and breakdowns were found wanting.

“It was always going to be tough to come back from 18-0 down, the little opportunities we had we coughed up,” said Sharks captain Jacques Botes.
