Are the Lions targeting the playoffs yet?
“No not at all, we are still taking it game by game, so we haven’t targeted anything and hopefully it will all still fall into place.
“There’s a lot of belief, last year a lot of us only played our first year of Super Rugby, so it was a bit of a learning curve, and this year, not that we are now an experienced group, we know more what to expect.”
The loss of Derick Minnie to injury was probably a big blow?
“Derick is a great team guy, a leader in building the spirit in the side so it would be awesome if we could win on Saturday against the Cheetahs for him too.”
Compared to the time at the Bulls, you must love all the game time?
“I’m really grateful to get so much game time and really enjoying it, it’s great to have guys believing in you.
“It helps to play a few games in a row as it is beneficial to get into the swing of things, there’s nothing like playing, the more time on the park the better you can get.”
How big will the Cheetahs challenge be?
“We have watched some of the Cheetahs games, I think it’s going to be a very tough challenge, they maul very well and you definitely can’t underestimate them, they are going to come here with a lot to prove.”
Will there be less of a threat at the breakdowns without Heinrich Brussow?
“Even without Heinrich, they have Tienie Burger and Boom Prinsloo, guys who are very good on the ground, they are just as tough.”
You have one of the highest tackle rates in the competition together with captain Warren Whiteley – is it a competition?
“No, (chuckles), there’s no competition between me and Warren to see who can make the most tackles, it’s just how the defensive system works, a lot of credit must go to defence coach JP Ferreira, he has done a lot of great work this year and a lot of the things have fallen into place.
“The defensive system has worked well, the knowledge that you can rely on your mate, trust the system and do what you have to do.”
The Lions scored a few wins of late – which have seen the crowds returning to Ellis Park, that must be awesome for the players?
“People are coming back to Ellis Park and it’s nice for us to notice, to be part of something special, and hopefully we can just keep on winning and bring even more people back.”
