The most interesting selection sees former Province junior player Dillyn Leyds return to the fold in the place of the injured Cheslin Kolbe at fullback. Leyds was a member of the Western Force Super Rugby squad earlier this season before returning to his native Cape Town.
Leyds has long been renowned for his pace and silky stepping, and as a result Province will still be able to call upon the faculties of an attacking No 15 against the Cheetahs. His form, however, is still an unknown matter as he has been out of action for a while.
Injuries also forced Coetzee’s hand when selecting his second row, as standout locks Jean Kleyn and Ruan Botha are out for the rest of the season. Argentine import Manuel Carizza and Province stalwart Rynhardt Elstadt will form a new-look duo for the men from the Cape. Province will certainly lose nothing in terms of physical intensity, but it remains to be seen if these men can exhibit the same lineout prowess as their predecessors.
In the final injury enforced change, big winger Pat Howard replaces Blitzbok Justin Geduld on the wing. Many sectors of the Province faithful would feel that Howard deserves a fair starting crack after being on the fringes of the team for a while. His pace, power and solid defence should stand the Streeptruie in good stead for the encounter.
In an unenforced change halfback Nic Groom has been drafted into the starting line-up at the expense of Louis Schreuder. Groom’s slick distributional game may be a better fit for the pace driven wide game that Province will be looking to play.
Two props in the form of Brok Harris and Oli Kebble have been named on the bench in anticipation of a titanic set-piece struggle. Jurie van Vuuren is also set to make his Currie Cup debut if called upon after representing the Stormers in Super Rugby earlier this season. Van Vuuren will add some hustle to Province in the latter stages, as he is known for his work rate.
