The Unlimited Titans may have enjoyed success in other competitions so far this season, but coach Rob Walter believes they have work to do when their Momentum One-Day Cup duties resume against the VKB Knights at Sahara Park Willowmoore on Friday.
The Pretoria-based franchise were crowned RAM SLAM T20 Challenge champions in December and a month later sit on top of the Sunfoil Series table.
But they are only fourth in the 50-over competition and will be looking to improve on that when the second half of the competition resumes after a near three-month break.
“We’re a little bit behind the eight-ball in this competition,” Walter said. “So we’ve got work to do.
“The first thing for us to do is improve our standing on the log and we can only do that by winning. Hopefully we can do that on Friday and improve our bid for a play-off spot.”
The league table is far tighter than Walter paints it, though, as his side are only five points behind leaders, the Cape Cobras. In fact, just six points separate top from bottom.
The Titans are bolstered for the clash with Proteas Faf du Plessis, Quinton de Kock and Chris Morris all available, before joining up with the national squad on Sunday. Farhaan Behardien will also join them.
“It’s always great to have the Proteas playing, even if it’s just for the one game,” Walter, whose side also face the Warriors over the weekend, added.
Knights coach Allan Donald believes they have even more work to do in the five remaining regular-season games and hopes to start well in Benoni.
“After five long weeks of red ball cricket, we’re looking forward to some one-day cricket,” he said. “We’ve got a tough task ahead in this competition.
“We’ve played five and lost three, so we have to make a big push in the remaining games, starting with a tough game against a really strong Titans team.
“I looked at that log yesterday and everyone is still in it. Win on Friday and you never know, but we’ll give ourselves a much better chance. So it’s going to be a real scrap.”
Rilee Rossouw is available before heading for South Africa duty. Corne Dry and Tumelo Bodibe have also been named in the squad, but Dillon du Preez remains sidelined.
