South Africa’s wheelchair tennis star Kgothatso Montjane and her partner Yui Kamiji of Japan have won the 2024 Wimbledon women’s doubles title.
The pair defeated French duo Diede De Groot and Aniek van Koot 6-4, 6-4 in straight sets during an epic tennis clash on Sunday.
This is Montjane’s third overall doubles Grand Slam title and her first Wimbledon title, that eluded her at last years tournament.
This victory is a momentous triumph for Montjane and Kamiji, who were silver finalists in last year’s competition at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club in London.

An ecstatic Montjane thanked everyone who supported them throughout the tournament.
“We are just happy that this year we managed to fight for it. It’s been a tough week playing each other and having to put our heads together to play doubles. It hasn’t been an easy one.
“But, we are happy to playing here and for the crowd for staying, because when you watch, the sport grows.” Montjane said.
Sport, Arts and Culture Minister Gayton McKenzie also congratualted the Wilmbledon champions in a post on X.
Well wishes and tributes have been pouring in for the duo after winning the highest honours in tennis.
Minister in the Presidency responsible for Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities, Sindisiwe Chikunga congratulated Montjane and Kamiji.
“Kgothatso Montjane’s victory brings hope to women, youth and persons with disabilities in South Africa. The White Paper on Rights of Persons with Disabilities gives clarion directives under each of the 9 Strategic Pillars, a responsibility to eradicate persistent systemic discrimination and exclusion experienced by persons with disabilities”, said Chikunga.
