Van Heerden suffers eighth-round TKO defeat

Johannesburg-born southpaw Chris van Heerden suffered an eighth-round TKO defeat at the hands of the unbeaten American Errol Spence in their scheduled 10-round welterweight contest on Friday at the Ricoh Coliseum, Toronto, Canada.

The writing was on the wall for the Los Angeles-based Van Heerden when he slumped to the canvas twice in the seventh round. It was the first time that Van Heerden suffered a knockdown in his career which now stands at 23 wins, two defeats and a draw in his 26-pro fight career.

Van Heerden, presently ranked No 7 by the IBF, emigrated to the United States in 2013 after winning the SA, ABU and International Boxing Organization (IBO) welterweight titles in South Africa.

The bout was the undercard on the WBC light-heavyweight title clash between champion Adonis Stevenson and Tommy Karpency, who was knocked out in the third round.
