SA Trail Master back on track

Life happens. And then there was, or rather, is, Covid-19.

Johan Grobler, who holds international 4×4 driver training accreditation, is well known within the 4×4 and off-road environment. Despite the current Covid-related challenges, opportunities still exist, and these often present themselves when least expected. “I had no intention of, after a long absence, getting involved with 4×4 driver training or competitions again,” said Johan.

The SA Trail Master 4×4 competition is his brainchild and it is because of the reinitiation of this competition that he is… well, on the trail again.

“We have changed the original format slightly. Although there will always be a competitive element within these events, the focus is to develop – hands on – driver and adventure skills while having lots of fun.”

There will be 10 qualifying rounds – 10 teams (two people per team) per round and the winners of each round will compete against one another in the final event held in Mozambique over the weekend (fi ve days) of November 13 to 17.

The Lowveld and surrounds are well populated with 4×4 bakkies, the men and women drivers of which consider their off-road prowess above average. This competition is for you – and it is right here on your doorstep.

The competition will not just challenge your driving skills. It will also take you into the discomfort of night driving and navigation, campsite manners, recovery, evasive driving techniques and skid control, and general awareness about what is important should you want to lead a tour of 4×4 vehicles.

“The golden rule with 4×4-ing, is slower is faster,” said Johan. “However, we have included some speed stages that will certainly liven things up just a little.”

They do, however, lack local entries. A collective effort from the Hoedspruit area will see Hoedies participate in every single round, with some of these teams hopefully ending up in the final.

So come on, you 4×4 Nelspartans – it is time to show some grit!

The 2021 SA Trail Master competition will be hosted at Klipspringer Lodge and should you wish to participate, you will find all the details on www.satrailmaster.co.za, or phone Johan on 082-411-7132.
