Toyota Prado gets new turbodiesel engine with more power

This is the same unit that powers the refreshed Hilux bakkie we sampled last week.

Toyota is giving its Land Cruiser Prado a significant upgrade that comes courtesy of a new engine with upped power outputs as well as new multimedia technologies.

The Toyota Land Cruiser Prado range also comes equipped with a new-generation multimedia system that incorporates a 9-inch touchscreen display.

The system replaces an 8-inch system that lurks in the previous-gen Land Cruiser Prado and boasts an enhanced voice recognition as well as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity.

Its power comes from a new 2.8-litre GD-6 turbocharged diesel engine with 150 kW and 500 Nm – that is 20 kW and 50 Nm more than the previous powerplant. This is the same unit that powers the refreshed Hilux bakkie we sampled last week.

All that amount of power is accessed via a six-speed automatic transmission.

The model line-up and 4.0 V6 engine remain unchanged.

According to Toyota, the Prado returns 7.9l/100km from its 150l fuel capacity and 87l main tank as well as an 87-litre sub-tank.

Maximum braked towing capacity is increased to 3,000kg on 2.8 models.
