Windhoek brings together good food and great vibes

Who will be crowned Mzansi’s best shisanyama?

The search for South Africa’s best Shisanyama continues and this past weekend the spotlight was on Chaf Pozi. Windhoek Beer together with celebrity chef Benny Masekwameng and Metro FM’s DJ Mo Flava visited the trendy shisanyama situated under the iconic Soweto Towers and got a taste of what it takes to get to the list of finalists.

Chaf Pozi is the last of the four shisanyama spots representing Soweto in the competition to be visited along with Meat Meet in Diepkloof, KwaLichaba in Orlando West and Emndeni based Social Link.

The aim of the Windhoek Search for South Africa’s Best Shisanyama is to find the best shisanyama spot in the country that brings together delicious food and good vibes. While Chef Benny checks and tastes the food, DJ Mo Flava checks out the vibe and together they look at how the two blends in together in making the establishment a place to be.

The competition is in its second year now and the stakes are high with a grand prize of over a million rand up for grabs.

Shisanyamas are pulling out all the stops to impress the judges and Chef Benny is more than impressed with the enthusiasm shown by contestants. “We have visited a few places already and I can say that their offerings were of a high standard and quality,”

Explains Chef Benny, “Looking at how high the standard and the quality was last year, already this year the stakes are even higher and the prize money has been doubled. It’s a serious competition and I can tell you that bragging rights to be South Africa’s best shisanyama comes with a lot of responsibility. We want something that is extra ordinary and something that speaks to the people.”

Something that speaks to the people is what the Windhoek Search for South Africa’s Best Shisanyama is all about. The people play a big part in the competition as they are given a chance to vote for their favourite shisanyama and ultimately decide who the winner will be along with the judges.

This is the first time Chaf Pozi is participating in this competition and Steven Mpete co-owner of the business believes they deserve to be where they are because they are one of the best in the country. It is not only the popularity of the place that makes Mpete optimistic about the competition but it is also the fact that they offer more than just meat.

“What sets us apart from other shisanyamas in this country is the fact that we are situated under the iconic Soweto Towers,” says Mpete. “We don’t only offer meat but there is a variety of other activities that comes with being at the Soweto Towers. People can enjoy things like bungee jumping, quad biking and many other outdoor activities.”

All these outdoor activities might put Chaf Pozi at an advantage when it comes to the ambience and vibe but the meat is even more important. Chef Benny pays attention to details such as how the meat is displayed, how it’s prepared and even elements such as hygiene and ease of placing an order for customers.

Being in the top eight is an honour for Mpete and he remains positive that they will make it to the finals. “What got us to this stage is definitely our meat. From where we source it to the marinade and spices that we use and to how we grill it makes us stand out from the rest,” concludes Mpete.
