3 Unmissable Johannesburg Galleries

Art has always played a huge role in society, and there are few places on earth as diverse in audience, and artists, as Johannesburg. Art might not be the biggest tourist attraction, but visiting any one of these three art galleries is highly recommended.

Art is something that is core to both a country’s personality and culture. It’s an avenue of expression and it helps tell the stories of the people, through the eyes of the artists. If you’re in Johannesburg and looking for something to do, check out any one of these three art galleries for some truly inspiring artworks.

Afronova: It was 2005 when Afronova opened its doors the first time in Newtown, since then it’s moved to Braamfontein and since then it’s relocated to Parkhurst. The gallery asims to be a “polyphonic platform for African contemporary expressions” and has showcased contemporary artists from around Africa, the Indian ocean and the Caribbean.

Roots Restaurant and Gallery: Boasting a relaxed atmosphere, world class chicken wings and a selection of arts and crafts to rival any in the world, Roots is not your average gallery. A long-time establishment in Soweto, it has served as a creative hub and seller of delicious soul food.

Kim Sacks Gallery: As one of the iconic landmarks in Johannesburg, the Kim Sacks Gallery needs very little introduction. The distinct commercial gallery was designed to mimic a “clay vessel” in which the gallery’s many unique items can be housed and displayed. It specialises in contemporary South African and African jewelry, wood carvings, textiles, furniture, beadwork, ceramics and basket work.

So regardless of whether you’re on the lookout for property to buy in Soweto, Johannesburg or the greater Gauteng to open your own gallery, or just looking for something to do on a Saturday afternoon, any one of these three galleries will provide a wonderful experience!
