Don Dada’s different Hip Hop flavour

Dada studied Pro Tools at the Sound Engineering Academy of Randburg.

There’s hope for the local aspiring hip-hop artists, and just to motivate them, we introduce, Menelik Nesta ‘Don Dada’ Gibbons who started from humble beginnings, battling with other local rap artists at the Slughuis in Diepkloof and now he shares the stage with prominent musicians, such as the Mahotella Queens, Cassper Nyovest, Kwesta and more.

Don Dada has an eclectic life which translates beautifully into his music. According to his bio, he was brought up by a Rastafarian father and Christian mother, was born in Harare, Zimbabwe migrated to South Africa at the age of 5 and grew up in Turffontein South of Johannesburg.

He has never cut his hair and his long dreadlocks run over a metre and some centimetres. He’s found his musical home in rap and not reggae, however, inevitably, reggae seeps into his musical arsenal as he makes hip-hop.

Unlike most rappers, Don Dada does not tend to be high pitched as he spits rhymes, he brings a unique style to our local hip-hop and you can call him the Barry White of rappers.

Don Dada has recently released a track featuring Afripella titled ‘Long Live Mama Winnie Mandela’ celebrating the life of a remarkable woman. He performed on the 1st Memorial Service held in Newtown.

A few days later he released the remix of his platinum ‘VIVA Mandela’ ft the legendary Mahotella Queens. He debuts this remix on the prestige Mandela Day 2018 launch stage

The song has reached RISA Multi-Platinum certification in less than four months. It was released in July 2017 and by December 2017 it had reached Multi-Platinum.

“When it comes to the Nelson Mandela song, it was not just about me writing a song about Tata Mandela, I also wanted to give back to the community, I arranged with the Nelson Mandela Foundation that they will receive 10% of proceeds made from the track donated to the foundation automatically.

“I would feel guilty to make a song about such an iconic man, make money and not give back to something he believed in and I feel like we both strongly believe in children and education,” said Dada.

“My long-term goal is to open up a school of excellence in Zimbabwe as well as South Africa, to develop children who have a passion about music,” he added.

More than anything, Dada, encourages education among young artists. He studied Pro Tools at the Sound Engineering Academy of Randburg.
