WATCH: ‘A Gang full of Alpha’s’-making music for the masses

Alpha Gang started off in Riverlea Extention 3, with only three guys.

Alpha Gang started off in Riverlea Extention 3, with only three guys, today they are a group of twenty-one members from all over Riverlea.

“We make music for the community, something that has a positive message. We talk about real things such as making it in life, relationships, and everything that’s happening in our community.

“We started off as a dance crew first and then started learning how to make beats so that’s how the music side started,” said one producer of the crew, Maribe Mokgobu better known as LaTrevor.

According to LaTrevor, the group is also meant for youngsters who want to stay off of the streets, away from gang violence and drugs.

“When some of them are chilling, they feel like they must try things such as drugs. So we started the crew and recruited people who are willing to work, some of them could sing, some could rap and then we also taught the others what we know,” added LaTrevor.

The group is three years old with both males and females who either rap, sing or do both.

When asked what was in the name ‘Alpha Gang’, producer Lukhanyo Mzanywa said that the term ‘gang’ in the name promotes diversity.

“It’s a gang full of alpha’s,” he said. “What makes Alpha gang diverse is its diverse cultures, it gives us the advantage to make music that people from all cultures can listen to,” explained LaTrevor.

Alpha Gangs genre is in Hip-hop, Rn’b and House music. The public can find 12 of the gangs’ songs on Audio Mic, Sound cloud and soon they’ll be on iTunes too.

They are still working on their Mixtapes and their EP’s. A few of the members of the group use to record at the recording studio at the Riverlea Recreation Centre but the studio has been closed since last September so the group has to rely on each other’s homes to record their music.

Alpha Gang would like to have a bigger fan base in Riverlea and they would also like to perform in the area, from there, they would like to grow nationally, then internationally.

“I just want to put Riverlea on the Map. People who are talented such as soccer players come from Eldos, Westbury, Soweto except for Riverlea. Why is that? So, if Riverlea can be put on the map, I think I will retire from the crew,” said Mzanywa.

The group would like anyone who is involved in marketing, the music industry, and even people who would like to join them in their mission to contact them. You can call LaTrevor on 079 335 0826 for more information.
