“I didn’t choose comedy, comedy chose me”

"I'm a very very funny guy."

“I’m a very very funny guy, I told my mom that I wanted to become a comedian and she laughed very hard at me, that’s when I saw my potential for being in the profession,” said Neo Moanakoena.

This Protea Glen comedian, popularly known as Snatcho has qualified for nomination at the at the Savanna Comics’ Choice Awards this year.

Moanakoena has qualified for 3 categories namely the non-English, the Savanna Audience Choice Award and the Savanna Comic of the year.

Even though the closing date for voting was on July 7 last week, Snatcho is very excited and confident for the award ceremony.

“To qualify for the awards there is a criterion that must be met. I’ve been doing comedy for the past five years so normally the judges will be keeping tabs on your work; 80% of the work that I do I perform is in African languages.”

The Savanna Choice Award is the only award that the audience have control over and the Savanna Comic of the Year is given to the actual comedians themselves to vote for one another.

Having started his career in 2012 at the South African Comedy Academy, he explained how he didn’t necessarily learn how to be a comedian, but the Academy provides a platform for comedians to showcase their craft and improve their skills through workshops.

Snatcho has worked with the likes of Toll Ass Mo at Centurion Shisanyama, the Soweto Comedy Festival and was featured on Yfm.He also performed at the Soweto Comedy Festival in 2015 and 2016.

“I’ve even performed in churches because I do have gospel gags; I perform in schools for motivational comedy, so I basically perform everywhere.”

With a history of being a class clown in school, Moanakoena never doubted his potential of making it big in comedy.

The Savanna Comedy Choice Awards will be on September 9 later this year at Montecasino.

Nominees for the ceremony will be announced in Fourways at the Parkhurst Comedy Drive on July 12.

Residents who have been following the comedian will be pleased to know that he is planning for his show ‘Snatcho and friends’ that will be hosted in September/October.”

” The most important thing I want to do is to inspire young aspiring comedians in the area in making sure that I give back.

So, I want people to know that this is the one and only comic in Protea Glen and I just want to give them what they need because comedy is good for the soul and it prolongs life on its own.”

For tickets to the awards, you can purchase them at your nearest Pick ‘n Pay outlet or at Computicket. If you voted you could stand a chance to win double tickets to go on the yellow carpet.

For Mandela Month Snatcho hopes to participate in any activity that the Protea Glen Secondary and Reasoma Secondary Schools, may have to celebrate the month.

To see more of him, before the awards, residents can catch him doing free performances at Tavern Restaurant every Tuesday, or at the Ozone Comedy Jam.

“Seeing people laughing, reduces the process of ageing if you are always laughing you stay rejuvenated all the time because you will be happy and everything of yours will be flowing smoothly,” concluded Snatcho.
