Championships looming closer for Sophiatown Majorettes

Majoretting all the way to the top.

The Sophiatown Majorettes Club have successfully qualified to participate in the South African Majorette and Cheerleading Association (SAMCA) National Championships which will be held from July 8 until July 15 at the Chatsworth Stadium in Durban.

The team comprises of 17 majorette girls who have the experience from Bernard Isaacs Primary School Majorettes and Newclare Primary School will be representing the community and the province in the SAMCA Presidents League Division.

Leanne King- Alexander and Anton Alexander established the club in 2015 with the support of Cathleen and Denzil Jones along with Bridgette and Fabian Japhta.

The Second Prop team: Shakira Jones, Karen Theron, Faheema Ali, and Paige Meyers.

The aim of it all is to restore the sport of majorettes to our communities and to cater the sport to primary school majorettes who cannot afford to continue the sport.

In the same breath, the team would like to invite all high school girls interested in the sport to become part of the Sophiatown Majorettes Club family.

According to King-Alexander, the programme goes beyond the barriers of training the skill of majoretting, it entails equipping the girls with life skills and promotes principles of dedication, commitment, discipline, self-respect and the respect for others, comradeship amongst members “sisterhood”, love, trust and loyalty towards each other.

They have successfully competed in the four league competitions and two provincial competitions.

The team is appealing to the community to assist with any donations from the list below which would help them aiding them to participate in their first National Championship Competition.

The Sub-leaders: Nikita Anderson, Robin Barrenton, Sharika Jones, and Britney Jones.
