The June 2017 Youth Expo, held at the Johannesburg Expo Centre, by the Gauteng Provincial Government in partnership with the Tshepo 1 Million initiative, concluded on June, 18.
Gauteng Premier, David Makhura, along with hundreds of aspiring Gauteng matriculants and high school scholars attended the career, job and entrepreneurship expo.
“Let’s sort out our country, let’s sort out this economy, let’s sort out the problem of youth unemployment,” said the Gauteng Premier during his media address at the Youth Expo.
The Expo was decked with a variety of informative stalls and interactive displays for interested students and attendees to easily navigate.
Influential discussions were held on numerous topics pertaining to the youth, including a ‘Women In Sport’ dialogue, which was open to public attendance.
The stalls aimed to educate the youth or recruit potential candidates into job placement organisations, such as Lulaway and higher education institutions, such as Boston City Campus and Business College and Regenesys Business School.
“I found the Youth Expo very exciting and interesting and it was helpful because it told us about different careers we can go into,” said Nishan Mclellan, a Fred Norman Secondary School matriculant and Youth Expo attendee.
Sister’s Beads @ Work was one of many companies that presented the youth with a potential job opportunity at the Expo.
“We want to uplift them, we want to transfer our skills to them,” said Tshepiso Mokhele, the marketing manager and crafter for Sister’s Beads @ Work.
The South African Police Service (SAPS) also presented a stall at the Youth Expo, along with numerous other Gauteng departments, including the Gauteng Department of Health and the Gauteng Department of Social Development.
Premier Makhura introduced the Tshepo 1 Million programme at the Youth Expo. The initiative was created by the Gauteng provincial government, in partnership with various private sector organisations (such as Coca-Cola and Microsoft SA) as a means to counteract youth unemployment in Gauteng and South Africa.
Tshepo 1 Million aims to provide skills training, job placement and entrepreneurship development for the unemployed youth. The goal is to empower one million young people by 2019.

“I found the career expo a fun, joyful ride because I learned new things. It taught me that law can relate to the film and entertainment industry and I didn’t know that,” said Kelly-Anne Mokwena, an aspiring law student, and current Fred Norman Secondary School matriculant.
