Embracing the significance of Youth Day through music

South African DJ, Kev Master will be releasing his latest track, 'Long Live' on Youth Day, as a dedication to the youth of SA.

June 16 marks a historical revolution in the past of South Africa’s youth.

The 1976 Soweto uprising was an iconic demonstration of the defiance, strength, unity, and determination of 10 000 to 20 000 school pupils, marching against the system of Bantu education during Apartheid.

Amongst the victims of the movement, 23 were killed and thousands more injured by police.

June 16 is now a national day of commemoration, honour, and celebration. Paying tribute to the youth of 1976 who sacrificed their lives fighting for fairer, better and equal education in South Africa.

Kev Master (29), aka Themba Mahlangu, a local South African DJ with over 10 years of experience in music production, has created a new mix in collaboration with Supreme DJ (Sandile).

Titled ‘Long Live’, the mix will be released on June 16, as a grand tribute to the youth of South Africa.

It draws its influence from the uprising of 1976 and the present-day protesting of South Africa’s university students for free tertiary education, as well as the plight of violence against women and children (#MenAreTrash).

“We named the track Long Live because we want our people not to give up on the fight for education and to stop the violence and abuse,” said DJ Kev.

The track is intended to inspire the youth to appreciate just how far South Africa’s education system has come since 1976, also reminding them of the power in uniting and working together as a nation.

“I want the youth to just look back at how united our fathers and mothers were when they fighting, not only for their education but the future education of the children, which is us at the moment,” said DJ Kev.

The two DJs want Long Live to be a part of the celebrations and festivities of Youth Day, backtracking the feelings and thoughts of everyone involved in the day.

“I would like people to sing along with the lyrics and reminisce in how far we have come,” said DJ Kev.

The house mix is intended to evoke feelings of happiness and pride. It contains elements of Afro House and drew inspiration from the Mighty WITs SDASM Choir’s rendition of Nkosi Sikelela iAfrica.

“I would like the track to unite the nation the same way the national anthem does,” said DJ Kev.In the future, he hopes to see the youth of South Africa develop into supportive and successful achievers.

“I would like to see our youth united and helping each other achieve goals and dreams, using our talents to help each other,” said DJ Kev.

Long Live will be available for download on SoundCloud. DJ Kev Master has featured on YFM, Soweto TV and performed at the popular Zone 6 Venue in Soweto.
