Art, food and music celebrated in Soweto

Soweto comes out in numbers to show support.

The first Saturday of every month is every art lover’s favourite day in Soweto. It’s the day when the Soweto Theatre gives all art exhibitors a platform to showcase their work and ranges from musicians and poets to artisans.

The theme for last Saturday was #ILoveSoweto which celebrated everything Soweto and everything black culture.

Headline Act Nathi Mankayi, unfortunately, couldn’t attend the event but the fun was never lost as Zoe Modiga and Urban Village blew the crowd away with their unique African sounds.

Poets Kgomotso Matjele and Hlengiwe Dlamini performed a moving poem as a tribute to all the women who were brutally killed over the past few days in and around Soweto.

“The Soweto Art and Craft Fair is not just about art, it is our own way of celebrating black culture and supporting one another as blacks,” said Thulani Kunene of the Soweto Art and Craft Fair.

“Movements like these are extremely vital in order to ensure the success of black businesses.”

“This is our first time at the fair. I actually decided to take my friend Xoliswa Nofemele, since she came to visit me all the way from the Northern Cape. I know it’s something she will let everyone know about back home,” said art lover Lindelwa Markman.

Children were also catered for as Aerobuddies, an aviation and aeronautics edutainment company, provided them with the opportunity to get lessons on flying an airplane.
