Gallery: KYP celebrates a decade of community development

KYP celebrated its 10th year anniversary with the community.

On May 27, Kliptown Youth Programme (KYP) celebrated their 10 year anniversary at the centre in Kliptown.

A program co-founded by Thulani Madondo in 2007 has been playing a significant role in breaking the cycle of drug and alcohol abuse amongst youth by keeping them busy and away from the streets.

It has been able to cover the costs of studies for youth who would otherwise not be able to afford them.

It also seeks to develop young and dynamic individuals who are willing to contribute effectively for the betterment of their community.

KYP has been able to offer tutoring programmes, employment networking, leadership in various fields, jobs, technology related, performing arts and sports as well as a library and food for the children.

Nelisiwe Walaza, KYP’s marketing manager, said that she enjoys giving back to the community.

“The road has been tough and exciting at the same time. Realising that our hard work and sacrifices are of benefit to the needy, feels amazing.

“We started with nothing but a dream to make a difference in our community and we stand today making all happen, it is really amazing to see the fruits of our hard work,” Walaza said.

The program showed appreciation to the Kliptown community for supporting them throughout the past ten years.

They invited the community to celebrate the day with them. Parents were entertained by their children through gumboot dance performances and other dance items.

Food and refreshments were provided and parents received vegetables. This was a way of showing appreciation for their support.

“Parents understand that we are creating a brighter future for their children. They fully support us and acknowledge our hard work and contribution to the community,” said Walaza.

The programme has now been elevated to another level which enables them greater ease of mobility as they have also received a vehicle from donors.
