DJ Killo dreams of slaying the competition

Shaquille Esau (20) hails from Eldorado Park Extension Nine, a disk jockey who specialises in turntables. Playing under the stage name DJ Killo, he started playing from the age of 13, where he mainly played deep house and commercial house.

He started to learn how to mix tracks on a virtual mixer, the Virtual DJ app, and has honed his DJ’ing skills over the years to playing on turntables.

He plays at all sorts of events, ranging from clubs to sporting grounds and even halls. Whatever the occasion, his growing reputation has made him a firm crowd favourite.

Esau said that the best thing a DJ can receive is the response from the crowd as they appreciate the music being played. As a disk jockey, finances are generally lucrative depending on the headliner at the event or if it is a local event.

In Eldorado Park the price of DJ Killo’s services are considered too high and in other areas, there is a lack of support as party goers come out in small numbers. Like many local DJ’s, he has goals of his own, although his ultimate goal is to, one day, play like veteran DJ Black Coffee.

This is only one of his idols, others worth mentioning are DJ Kent and Black Motion. To spice up the way events are held, DJ Killo has incorporated a drums and percussion player into his sets.

This innovative way of DJ’ing adds another element to his performances and has been well received by lovers of the house music genre.
