Dance crews burn the floor for a prize

Hip Hop meets Pantsula in the inaugural Club10HVP Dance Competition which is set to revive the culture of dance in the country.

Dancers from across the province of Gauteng put on their dancing shoes and burned the floor at the Club10HVP (Hip Hop vs Pantsula) Dance Competition this past weekend.

Held at the Joburg City Hall, the auditions saw dancers from all walks of life compete for top honours and a huge cash prize of  R40 000.

The first of its kind dance competition brings under one roof Hip Hop and Pantsula dancers with an aim of reviving the culture of dance in the country.

Hip Hop dance crews go up against Pantsula dance crews and winners will get to make a difference in their communities by donating R20 000 to a charity organisation of their choice.

HVP is an initiative by Club10Tavern in association with Amstel, Johnnie Walker, Hunters Edge, Tovaritch Vodka and Vodacom.

It is aimed at raising awareness about the dangers of underage drinking and fight alcohol abuse, especially amongst the youth.

“We created this platform to shine a spotlight on talent that may not be necessary be seen. We are doing it in a way that promotes responsible drinking while we give back to our communities,” said Elaine Botha, brand manager at Club 10.

For Zama Cele who is the Brand Coordinator at Club10, it goes as far as promoting a healthy lifestyle for young people. “It’s more than about dance but it comes down to fitness and getting them off the streets and away from all the bad things like drugs and crime,” explained Cele.

While the competition is all fun and games for the dancers, it’s not an easy one for the judges who have a tough job of selecting the winners.

The guest judge at the auditions Sicelo Xaba was impressed by the performance put on by all participating crews.

Looking into the grand finale Xaba believes that any crew that brings uniqueness on stage stands better chances of winning the competition.

“We want a crew that gives its all on stage. It is important that crews meet the competition criteria and be unique.

“We don’t want to see something that we’ve being seeing for the past five years. We want something new,” said Xaba.

The HVP grand finale will take place late next month in Soweto with renowned choreographers Vukani Khoza, Lorcia Cooper and Delta the Leo on the panel of judges.

Competition creative director and co-founder of Kan Communications Kenna Mahlangu promised music and dance lovers a sterling show in the finale.

He said, “Hip Hop and Pantsula dance styles have grown every year and are now influencing different spheres of our lives.

“We hope HVP will contribute immensely to the development of these two dance forms. We look forward to seeing various great crews with fresh moves at the HVP finale.”
