ORLANDO: Face of Vilakazi Street crowned…See Photos

The most famous street in the land gets an ambassador

It was a night of glitz and glam at the crowning of Miss Face of Vilakazi Street in Orlando West this past weekend.

The who’s who in the local social scene invaded the Box Shop to witness the crowning of the first ever ambassador of the most popular street in the country.

Ten of the most beautiful and intelligent ladies battled it out for the crown in front of hundreds of fun seekers.

Fatima Moffat took the title while Phoebe Mabelane and Mamohato Lebona were named first and second princesses respectively.

Moffat has registered her name in the history books as the first winner of the pageant founded by former Miss Soweto Lungile Buhale.

“This beauty pageant is all about empowering and up-skilling young intelligent women. It is our way of challenging the stereotype that women who enter beauty pageants have nothing to offer but good looks.

“That is why we had to emphasise on showcasing whatever talent our contestants have,” said Buhale.

To prove the organisers right, Moffat is an artist and she gave the audience a glimpse of what she does best, painting. Other talents showcased by contestants were dance, poetry and public speaking.

Moffat had to juggle between her job as a flight attendant and preparing for the pageant and at the end, it has all paid off.

“I feel like I have sacrificed a lot to be where I am today. I have a lot of plans moving into the future as the face of Vilakazi Street,” said Moffat.

The message she has for other young girls is that they should not let failure determine their fate; they should keep pushing until something happens.

Entertainment was delivered courtesy of another young talent by the name of Dingalethu Mapithela who got the crowd going crazy with his tunes. The night ended with an after party at
