Proudly sponsored by White Star Super Maize Meal, Miss Soweto pageant is on its 39th year this year and organisers made sure they raise the bar by adding other prizes apart from the main one which went to Kgasi.

Kamogelo Kodisang from Orlando West-Mzimhlophe and Nokukhanya Kunene from Emdeni were crowned first and second princesses respectively while Phumzile Nyembe from Diepkloof took the tittle of Miss Personality.

Miss People’s Choice went to Busisiwe Mmotla from Emdeni  while Tsholofelo Ramodesha was named the Social Butterfly of the pageant. Kgasi takes over the reins from Buhle Xulu from Orlando West who described her tenure as challenging and empowering at the same time.

“Selecting Nthabiseng Kgasi is a clever choice for Soweto and for the brand. Kgasi has displayed the key qualities that make for a fine role model for girls of all ages in and around the community.

“Miss Soweto plays a significant role in promoting positive change for those around her and on behalf of White Star we wish our new Miss Soweto every success during her reign,” White Star marketing manager Mokhele Makhothi said.

The new queen of Soweto describes herself as a strong, ambitious and goal-driven African woman. Currently studying towards a degree in marketing and communications, Kgasi is a big dreamer who is planning on starting her own foundation called “Rough Diamonds.”

The foundation will focus on encouraging and inspiring young girls from Soweto to dream big and chase those dreams.

The prizes for this year’s competition were sponsored by White Star, Afro Nubian, Urban Zulu, Nexdor Restaurant and Pick ‘n Pay Maponya Mall.

The grand prize for the queen was R50 000 and a chance to represent White Star as a brand ambassador amongst other things.

Kgasi was not the only winner at this year’s Miss Soweto pageant, legendary Leonard Sithole who is the founder of Miss Soweto was honoured with a lifetime achievement award.

Sithole and his Drankensburg Promotions founded the Miss Soweto pageant almost four decades ago.

American songstress, Monique Bingham accompanied by a variety of Soweto’s talents that were discovered at the White Star Talent Search held earlier in the year made sure that revellers danced the night away.
