Face of Vilakazi Street pushing boundaries on girl empowerment
Beauty pageant introduces skills workshops to up skill girls.
The Face of Vilakazi Street pageant hosted a workshop for girls on Tuesday morning. The workshop which was held at Nambitha Restaurant in Orlando West was targeted at girls who are in the running to be the new face of Vilakazi Street.
The pageant was founded by Miss Soweto 2014 Lungile Buhale and it is aimed at up-skilling and empowering girls from the whole of Johannesburg.
“Today is the first workshop for Face of Vilakazi Street. We are doing these workshops because we want all the girls who have entered the competition to learn as much as possible. Today they will be learning about hair and the following one will be about PR and branding,” said Buhale.
The workshops are in line with the founding principles of Face of Vilakazi which is to empower girls with skills necessary for their career development.
The organisers want every girl who is part of the pageant to get something out of it even if they don’t win the main prize.
They are taught about dressing well, eating healthy and even how to conduct themselves in public.
Buhale said, “We have Style Diva and Perfect Choice who will be helping us with teaching girls how to take care of their hair and their weaves. Move Magazine will be assisting us when we do the PR and branding workshop.”
A total of 25 girls attended the Tuesday workshop and they all have ambitions of becoming the face of the most famous street in the country.
The skills workshops form part of the activities which are a build-up to the final event to be held in February where the face of Vilakazi Street will be crowned.
