Eye Awareness Month comes to Eldos!

Parents and teachers urged to test children’s eyes.

Nice Eyes Optometrist at Crystal Mall in Extension Six has partnered with N and K optical laboratories and EldosFM to raise awareness about the importance of having your eyes tested on a regular basis.

Bhadresh and Maya Laxmidas who operate the optometrist shared their findings of eye conditions which are prevalent in Eldorado Park.

Maya, a qualified optometrist, who has conducted numerous eye examinations for residents says, “We have found that children who come to be examined, are far-sighted or very short sighted and this causes them to rub their eyes excessively. This excessive rubbing induces astigmatism which is when the eye becomes oval shaped.”

Parents and teachers are urged to subject children to comprehensive eye examinations as children who have problems with their vision display a lack of interest in schoolwork, are averse to reading and are constantly fatigued due to constantly overextending the muscles in the eye.

Cost is also another key factor which causes residents to avoid eye examinations as most are pensioners who are unable to meet the financial demand a new pair of spectacles would cost.

October is Eye Awareness Month, and the partnership seeks to draw attention to the many conditions such as glaucoma, which have no early warning signs and can cause total blindness if not treated early.

It is an alarming statistic that 80 percent of blindness is avoidable and to increase awareness, Nice Eyes Optometrist, EldosFM and N and Kay Optical Laboratories are hosting a competition which will see 10 needy recipients getting a second chance at restoring their sight.

The competition runs from October 19 to November 10 and people are required to submit a voice note on the EldosFM Whatsapp group nominating anyone they feel deserve a free pair of glasses.

The contact number is 084 640 0000 and winners will be announced on the Maak ‘n Plan show hosted by Bevelyn Makue from 12pm to 3pm daily.

The competition is limited to reading and distance glasses subsequent to a comprehensive eye examination being conducted and the handover will take place at the practice on the lower level of Crystal Mall.
