Langarm revival in Eldos

Stalwart Bobby Merckel to be honoured at "langarm" dance

The ‘langarm’ dance scene has been part of the social and cultural heritage of the Eldorado Park for the past 80 years, and veterans of this popular dance form are keen on passing down the dance form to younger generations.

LYPS Inc. (Louis, Yunis, Peter, Sayed) are actively engaged in campaigning to preserve the dance form through increasing awareness on radio and hosting dance sessions to attract a younger crowd.

According to Louis August, founder-member of the group, “We have embarked on a vigorous awareness campaign to attract younger members of our society to partake in this unique social activity and our efforts are being rewarded with a host of dance academies being established which are attracting a number of our youth.”

LYPS Inc. and EldosFM are hosting a ‘langarm’ dance at the Don Mateman Hall in Extension Five on October 8.

Starting at 8 pm, the event will feature well-known live band, the Hotshots and a nominal cover charge of R60, 00 per person. There will be refreshments on sale as well as prizes to be won by attendees.

‘Langarm’ stalwart Bobby Merckel will be honoured for his long-time contribution to the dance form in the form of a lifetime achievement award.

According to August, Merckel has shared the stage with the likes of Kippie Moeketsi and a host of other ‘langarm’ and jazz aficionados.

People interested in attending the event may contact Louis August on 083 345 9344 or Yunus on 082 339 9160.
