Shaking up the dance scene in EldoradoPark

Eldorado Park is brimful with talent. None more so than Johnathan Retief (20) and his award-winning dance troupe. Retief started the No Limits Academy in 2014.

Although focusing mainly on hip-hop, they are open to other genres and occasionally have seasoned dancers sharing their knowledge of different dance styles.

The group’s biggest accomplishment is achieving 14 gold medals at the South African Dance School Championships held at the Victory Theatre in Houghton on September 9 this year.

When asked why he chose dance as a sport, Retief replied, “Eldorado Park has enough soccer players and other athletes who have excelled over the years, but very few people are interested in dance as an art form and as a sport.

”Artists, dancers and models should be seen as equal to all other athletes and should be respected accordingly.”

The academy, comprised mainly of the youth, face serious financial challenges and are calling on people interested in supporting the arts to help out in terms of transport to and from events and competitions as well as someone willing to lend their design skills to assist with outfits for use during performances. Johnathan Retief may be contacted on 071 786 6101 for people interested in backing the academy.
