The search is on for the next Miss Soweto

Beauty and brains wanted at this year’s Miss Soweto competition

“This year you can only expect fireworks,” said Collin Sithole, founding director for Miss Soweto. Sithole made these remarks this past Saturday at the launch of the Miss Soweto 2016 Competition at Maponya Mall.

It’s that time of the year again when White Star Maize Meal is calling for all beautiful and intelligent girls to make a clever choice and enter the competition to be the queen of the biggest township in the African continent.

Judges for this year’s Miss Soweto are expected to have a tough time selecting the winner as the organisers are aiming for a standard higher than last year.

“Last year the standard was high and we can’t afford to go lower than that. This year we will have more interaction with the community and we want to go big on giving back to the community,” said Sithole.

Auditions kick off in September and since beauty is not the only requirement, judges are expected to have a lot on their plate when selecting the winner.

Outgoing queen Buhle Xulu from Dube said being Miss Soweto has opened many doors of opportunities for her.

“I’ve become a better person and I am proud to have made a difference in Soweto during my reign.

“My wish for the next Miss Soweto is that she will continue to carry forward the vision of the pageant, with the understanding that it offers one so much more than being just a beauty queen.” said Xulu.

The competition is more than just about beauty. It’s about beauty and a whole lot of other things.

The spirit of giving should be one of the important traits contestants should possess as the organisers have hinted that this year’s competition is about giving back to the community.

In its 38th year, the competition has been playing a very important role in empowering and young women.

According to White Star’s marketing manager, Mokhele Makhothi, “Miss Soweto plays a very important role in providing a platform for girls and women from Soweto to be empowered.

“Contestants receive mentorship and guidance to help them excel in life and make a positive contribution to the community. White Star has been a proud sponsor of Miss Soweto for the past seven years, and as South Africa’s favourite brand of maize meal, we are proud to play a part in the enrichment of the young women of Soweto.”

Entries are officially open and will close on September 27. To enter, hopefuls can visit misssoweto.whitestarquick.co.za or the White Star Facebook page.

Once all entries have been received, auditions will be held throughout Soweto to select the top 20 contestants.

These contestants will go through an intense training period of coaching, judging, rehearsals and public appearances before the finals which will be held on December 3 at the Soweto Theatre.
