Police Encouraged to hit the gym

Obesity in the police is worrying.

The latest annual mid-year police health statistic released in July showed an increase in obesity among police officers.

Chiawelo sector manager Dumisane Joja said he was motivated and has started trimming and hit the gym hoping it will help him keep fit and

mentally sharp.

He said that exercise keeps him healthy and ready to chase criminals and stay sharp mentally.

“Trust me, since I started exercising, I now wake up fit, ready both in body and mind.”

Joja said it’s high time other officers get encouraged to shape up.

“Going to the gym on our rest days or when our shifts end or before we start our shifts, it’s healthy and wise and prepares us to toughen up against criminals, it’s great to spend even an hour at gym instead of going to drink alcohol and eat greasy meat and fat cakes since its winter.

“Right diet must be followed, followed by drinking lots of water and cutting off alcohol and fatty food and that way we can be able to fight

obesity within the SAPS industry because the situation of having lots of obese officers affects progress and effectiveness to fight crime.”

Joja said some of the machines which often use to tone up his body and keep fit include trade mills

and bicycles at the gym and that has helped him Police officers encouraged to hit the gym lose weight and stay fit.

Moroka Police Station communications officer John Serala said: “It is sad that our annual police health statistics have shown the increase in

obesity in the South African Police Services and all I can say is that police must eat healthily and cut more fast foods.

“Their eating habits must include fruits and vegetables, every Wednesday its sports day for police to do aerobics and gymnasium and that will help.”
