10 000 plates of food for Soweto youth

An NPO will be celebrating Mandela Day for the next three days throughout Soweto schools.

Food for Life Soweto will be distributing 10 000 plates of food to 21 schools on July 19, 20 and 21 as a Mandela Day initiative.

The non-profit organization (NPO) was formed 30 years ago and aims to increase the daily distribution of freshly prepared meals of 1000; this they hope to do through consistently finding, engaging and enlightening donors, volunteers, and other supporters.

“What started as a free meal distribution to the hungry neighbourhood has rapidly developed into an organization that reaches informal settlements, old age homes, orphanages, and schools.”

“Our vision of this initiative is to have an entire network of hunger-free zones regionally and nationally,” said Viresh Panday the chairman of the NPO.

For the last 15 years, Food for Life Soweto has concentrated on providing warmly prepared meals to about 1000 primary school children on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays in Soweto.

Food for Life Soweto is allied to Food for Life South Africa which has as its plan of the development of the concept of “hunger-free zones” within the South African community.

This means that the organisation works on the belief that no one should go hungry within a 20 km radius of any of the distribution points, and there are 28 such centres nationwide.

Panday said the organisation understands the concept of food giving that constructs them as productive givers in the country.

“As an organisation, we believe that food giving in South Africa plays a pivotal role in rekindling a sense of civic responsibility and enhancing social cohesion.”

“We have taken up the responsibility in the pursuit of food distribution to the hungry,” said Panday.
