#BeeChallenge registrations open
The Mzansi Spelling Bee organisation invites aspiring spelling bee competitors to go register for their spelling bee competition.
Mzansi Spelling Bee invites all those who would like to register for the Spelling Bee competition to come through to Protea South Community Centre on July 4 and 5.
This is a non-profit organisation, 100% of pledge funds will go towards supporting spellers and improving literacy in South Africa.
“We will have the speller registrations in Soweto from 11am – 3pm,” said Ntsako Mkhabela, founder and Managing Director of Mzansi Spelling Bee.
Mzansi Spelling Bee is an annual spelling challenge and literacy support program for children from the ages of nine to 17 years old.
Formed in 2012 by Miyela, a youth civil society organisation, Mkhabela said, “The spelling Bee was created for young South Africans to work with the broader community to build a culture of reading and spelling.”
The organisation has partnered with the government, non-governmental organisations (NGOs), schools, educators and families to ensure that South Africa grows to be a society that reads and values education.
“We are currently in a speller recruitment phase and have set a target of 10 000 spellers for the year 2016.
“Thousands of learners from all the provinces are encouraged to take part in Mzansi Spelling Bee challenge, given South Africa’s challenges with literacy we would like to challenge ourselves to get as many children involved across all 9 provinces,” said Mkhabela.
Aspiring spellers will be given a word list with over 500 words to prepare for the programme and they are chosen to improve their working vocabulary and to challenge them.
This is an opportunity to give out information to the children or parents and register them to join the Spelling Bee.
Those who want to sponsor a child can go to the hall on the registration date.
Local businesses, parents and individuals are encouraged to be part of the #BeeChallenge to call to action, a dare and challenge to walk the talk.
Take the #BeeChallenge and sponsor 1 or 100 as many spellers as you can.
Application forms should be accompanied by an application fee.
