The happiest 5K brightens up Soweto

Color runners do it for the good course

The first every Color Run to be hosted in Soweto lived up to expectation.  Also known as the Happiest 5k in the planet, the Color Run took place at the University of Johannesburg Soweto Campus on Sunday this past weekend.

Organisers estimated that about 7000 people from across the province attended the event. The race was untimed and there were no prices awarded but runners were running for a good course.

The fun of being showered with coloured powder at every kilometre of the race was the beigest reward for the runners.

“The Color Run exceeded our expectations we would love for it to come back to Soweto if the people want it again next year,” said McLennan Craig, one of the organisers of the event.

What made the Color run even more exciting for the revellers was the live performance by The Soil before the start of the race.

McLennan said, “The whole event was as vibrant as the community and we loved putting smiles and bringing colour to Soweto.”

All the proceeds from the event will be donated to a Meadowlands Zone 7 bases Mokgome High School. The event was sponsored by Capitec Bank.

The Colour Run is a feel-good and colourful event which takes place in number of countries across continents.

Runners of all shapes and sizes wear pristine white costumes which end up being covered in different colours when they get to the finish line.

The event is rounded off by a colour festival where revellers get completely covered in bright colours.

McLennan thanked Sowetans and all those who embraced the Color Run. “Those who couldn’t make it, we hope to see you next year,” he said.
