Young innovators with street cred

The crew is on a mission to conquer Soweto.

From street parades to youth dialogues and business seminars, the spirit of Youth Month was felt across Soweto.

It is only fair to wrap the month up by shining a spotlight on a group of four boys who are doing more than what one would expect at their age.

United by the love of music, they came together to form a group and called themselves Cosmic Kush Entertainment four years ago.

Cosmic Kush is made up of Karabo “Mistry Smoke” Letsapa, Magape “Hyperlect” Mangale, Karabo “Snowflake”Modise and Welile “Tso-tso” Mabaso.

Born and bred in Rockville, these guys are on a mission to turn the spotlight back to Soweto with their art.

The four years Cosmic Kush has been in the game has seen them transform from being just a music group.

Add fashion and film making in the mix and you get a new generation of popular culture influencers.

If we were to label Cosmic Kush as just a music group we wouldn’t be doing justice.

“Music was the one thing that united us but we couldn’t ignore our love of fashion,” says Modise.

Like most young people from Soweto, these guys didn’t want to limit themselves and saw the potential in themselves to do more.

They have mesmerised fans in and around Soweto with their music which they describe as, “A fusion of old school lyrical rap and a funky sound of new age Hip Hop without going the Skhanda route.”

On the fashion side of things, they are working towards realising their dream of having their own unique label while helping other young upcoming designers from their hood.

The group is not just about being cool and being reckless but they are involved with programmes that help other young people.

They are helping other youngsters who want to get in the fashion business.

Modise is adamant that working together with other young dreamers and helping each other will take them to new heights.

“Hip Hop is changing nowadays and we want to play a part in that change,” says Letsapa.

Mangale agrees by saying, “Music and fashion is one thing. It’s a lifestyle and once you get that right people will start taking you serious.”

Talk about being taken serious; the group has released a couple singles which have received a positive response in Rockville and other parts of Soweto.

They are currently working on their mixtape which is set for release later this year. Cosmic Kush is not rushing to go commercial with their music at the moment.

“We are still working on making a name for ourselves in Soweto before we can go commercial,” says Modise.

With their music and fashion Cosmic Kush is set to play a lead role in influencing popular culture in a responsible manner that inspires other young people.

Modise describes their group as a, “Collective of innovators. We are bring different types of flavours in fashion and in the Hip Hop game.”
