Baby steps for Soweto Fashion Week

Local designers showcased their talent at the third annual Soweto Fashion Week with a range of styles.

The fifth annual Soweto Fashion Week took place at The Soweto Theatre in Jabulani on May 27 to May 30, with local and national designers strutting their stuff through a wide variety of styles.

The event included performances by local artists and actors from Rhythm City who used the occasion to promote their upcoming albums and musical talents.

Fashion junkie, Caswelldin Tau said designers need to put more effort into their work; “Some of the designs looked unfinished which was disappointing. They need to put effort into preparation and professionalism because that is what will set you apart in the industry and take you places. I look forward to a better standard next year.”

Designers Shona Accra and duo Bespoke from Soweto stood out as their garments oozed creativity and professionalism.

“We designed the suit that Johannesburg Mayor Parks Tau wore to the State of The City Address and we’re looking at designing for more people in the public eye to market our brand,” said Nkululeko Makhubu, one of the creators of the label.

“We work hard independently and it has proven to be fruitful to our growth as a brand.” added Makhubu.
