7 things you didn’t know about the new Miss SA

Some things you didn't know about Miss SA 2015, Liesl Laurie.

Liesl Laurie, Miss South Africa 2015 is not only a super model. Here are seven things you didn’t know about her:

Drum Majorette

Laurie became a drum majorette while attending school at E W Hobbs Primary and continued when she was in high school. She joined a club when in high school. Laurie obtained junior and senior provincial colours as a majorette.

Baggy clothes

As a teenager, Laurie would wear baggy tops and sweatpants, she hardly wore dresses.

Gym

Laurie says she was skinnier than she is now and is happy she gained some weight. She eats to gain and maintain her weight because she doesn’t want girls who look up to her to think that they should be skinny. Laurie would jog at the stadium in Extension Nine.

Free flowing tears

Laurie gets teary eyed easily. She said she hoped she wouldn’t cry at the Miss SA Pageant and done well.

Everything is a blessing

“I believe that everything is a blessing, good or bad,” Laurie said. When things seem to be falling apart, Laurie would pray. She believes that there is power in prayer.

Dear Self

Laurie writes letters to herself if she feels like she is going through a dilemma. She keeps the letters to read later and realise how much she has grown since the letter was written. The last ‘Dear Self’ letter she wrote was in January.

Laurie writes ‘Dear Future Self’ letters too as a way of reminding her of her goals.

Family

When returning home from preparation for Miss SA, Laurie would unwind with her family, watching movies or sleeping.

“It doesn’t matter where you come from, it’s about knowing who you are and where you want to go,” Laurie said.
