Protea South residents long for proper living conditions

“It is not nice living in slums, especially without electricity.”

Every first Monday of October dates as the World Habitat Day.

This started on December 17 1985 when the United Nations General Assembly designated the first Monday of October of every year as World Habitat Day.

The theme changes every year and when it first started in 1986, the theme was “Shelter is My Right” and was hosted in Kenya, Nairobi.

This year’s theme was “Voices from the Slums” and the campaign aimed at recognising life in urban informal settlements and give a voice to slum dwellers for improving the quality of their living conditions.

Like every other person, people from Protea South would also like to live in better conditions.

They voiced themselves and said that they would like to get proper houses instead of living in shacks.

William Mpumpula, who also resides in the slums, said that it is not nice living in shacks especially without electricity.

“Living in slums is not good, all I wish for is getting a proper house with electricity and I’ll be happy,” said Mpumpula.

Protea South residents not only need proper housing and electricity but they need proper flushing toilets as well.

Nonetheless, they appreciate their homes because they said that it’s better they have a roof under their heads unlike having no shelter at all.
