Pupils show off cooking skills

Grade R pupils take part in a make and bake where their skills were put to test.

The Johannesburg Central District held a make and bake for 169 schools of Grade R pupils on Wednesday.

Children and teachers filled the St. Ives Primary School hall with a variety of foods made by pupils.

“Bringing children into the kitchen can benefit them in many ways. It helps the child hone basic maths skills by doing something as simple as counting eggs or pouring water into a measuring cup,” Ronica Pardesi, the coordinator said.

Reading a recipe and following steps add to the child’s vocabulary and works on listening skills.

For children, cooking can also encourage an adventurous palate, help them explore with their senses and boost confidence.

“Children love to show what they can do and working in the kitchen provides opportunities to gain a sense of accomplishment,” Pardesi said.

Children demonstrated to judges how their dishes were prepared and indicated the ingredients used.
