Last Thursday, in an effort to raise the importance of kidneys role in our bodies, Helen Joseph Hospital commemorated World Kidney Day (WKD).
WKD celebrates its ninth year of bringing awareness of this organ and every year brings a new theme and angle of trying to educate people of their diets that play a vital role in the fight against kidney disease.
This year’s theme is Chronic kidney disease and aging. The aim of the event is to raise awareness of the risk factors for kidney disease.
Gwendolene Klaaste, the organiser, said: ”We need to educate people about the dangers of having kidney disease and non-functioning kidney’s.
“March 13, was dubbed ‘World Kidney Day’ and we are trying to make people aware of this deadly disease.
“We had music and held a march to raise the importance of the role that the kidney plays in our bodies.”
Chronic kidney disease (CKD) affects people of all ages and races, this according to International Federation of Kidney Foundations (IFKF).
Health authorities worldwide will have to deal with high and escalating costs if no action is taken to treat the growing number of people with CKD.
On World Kidney Day all governments are encouraged to take action and invest in further kidney screening, according to the IFKF.
