Earthlife helps Riverlea

Earthlife brings awareness to residents of Riverlea.

This past weekend, Earthlife Africa Johannesburg (ELA JHB) had an event in Riverlea to promote social and environmental justices.

ELA is a volunteer driven organisation that deals with well-being and improving people’s quality of life.

Several campaigns and projects have been started by the organisation in helping educate people on green living.

Projects like ‘Sustainable Energy and Climate Change Project’ involves research and published publications on economic and social benefits of renewable energy for South Africa.

“We come to Riverlea about five years ago because environmental factors around the area, with mining sites that are operational.

“This can cause a lot of people’s health, water and living conditions.

“In South Africa when we mine for gold we also mine for uranium gas, this could be very harmful to people who are expose to it,” said Judith Taylor Branch Co-narrator.

The mining industry is major employers in this country, with more than one million people in mining-related employment.

ELA JHB has decided to start educating people on the effects of the exposer of dangerous gases that comes from mining for gold.

“Riverlea has become one of the communities that we are helping with awareness and educate people,” said Taylor.
