MAD making a difference

Mothers Against Drugs held awareness day to inform mothers on drugs you can find in the market today.

This past Saturday, Mothers Against Drugs (MAD) in Riverlea hosted awareness day to promote awareness about the struggles of the scourge of drugs.

The day followed the theme ‘Jika Majika’ with dance competitions and prize that was given to the best dancer.

“This is to promote having clean fun without abusing a substance, said Glennette Joseph the chairperson.

MAD was started by mothers who had children that were addicted to substances.

“We have started the organisation about two years ago and it has been an uphill battle with outside factors that has made our struggle much harder,” said Joseph.

The organisation has helped addicts to stop abusing a substance through a support group that is hosted on a weekly basis in Riverlea.

Many parents don’t really know what are the substances, how it looks, symptoms or what it does to your child.

“I didn’t really know anything about the drugs on the market now but after we started this organisation we learnt all that we need to know.

“Uplift and educate mothers on what type of drugs can be found on the market and uplift the youth because the youngster believe that there is a life in selling drugs, said Dawn Gamit founder of MAD.

With a community that lacks resources for youth project has seen the substance abuse increase in the area. For more information about the support group please contact Glennette Joseph 076 757 9773
