Mob justice unacceptable in our country – minister

Harsh punishment to be given to people found guilty of mob justice.

“You cannot resolve crime through committing crime; it is simply unacceptable and it’s a serious crime.”

These are warning words of police minister Nathi Mthethwa as he opens his speech condemning illegal service delivery protests and killing of suspects by residents when caught.

“We strongly warn the perpetrators of such disturbing incidents because mob justice is unjustifiable and no one has the right to take the law into their own hands no matter how worst is the crime the suspect has committed.

“You cannot resolve crime through committing crime; it is simply unacceptable, so this is a strong warning that if anyone is caught committing such activities we will arrest them and deny them bail because we have been warning them of such crime”

“What is really worrying is the fact that the perpetrators of such acts are often perceived as heroes by some residents when such horrifying incidents happens.

“Police are in hot pursuit of these so-called heroes because there is nothing heroic when you burn and kill people and we will make sure that we increase visibility of officers who will be dealing with such acts.”
