Ndlovukazi, a musical for encouragement

Musical portrays women's struggles.

Ndlovukazi is a musical production by Thabang Ramaila that is focused on the strength of women against all odds and the same strength that women give to others even though they don’t have much left.

This strength is made functional as different couples experience a number of different situations with all the situations highlighting different forms of abuse.

The opening scene features a woman who survives a miscarriage and an abusive husband who makes life unbearable for her, but ultimately she makes it through.

Actor Mmule Mokgale says like an elephant, the women in the play still keep strong in the different hardships they go through because of men.

“Even though the message is carried across by women, the show can be therapeutic for men.

“As a man attending the play, you can only feel remorse when you relate to the wrong portrayed by the men in the play as they victimise women,” the narrator Mpho Ratane said. The production doesn’t only focus on women but encourages everyone to go out of their way to make it through challenges.

“It is a collective work of real life experiences where some of the actors have actually gone through a miscarriage or grew up in an abusive environment.

“In a sense they are portraying what happened to them and how they made it through, encouraging others on how they can change their situation,” said Mokgale.

The production started as a dance piece with the idea of an elephant representing the strength of women, later other elements such as singing and acting were incorporated resulting in the play being bought by the Soweto Theatre.

The production team are now aiming high, hoping the play makes it to Broadway in the near future.

The play will be running from December 15 until 29 at the Soweto Theatre or contact the theatre on 011 930 7461 for more information.
