WATCH: Flava Yase Kasi kicks off in Soweto

"There are good players in our townships, they just need our support and motivation," - Shakes Gwabeni.

Soccer fans, players and legends gathered at the Elkah Stadium in Rockville as the much-anticipated Flava Yase Kasi Tournament kicked off on Saturday, June 23.

The 6 aside tournament, hosted by Soweto Gold Superior Larger, saw the winning team walking away with R10 000. The tournament took place in 7 townships, Soweto, Mamelodi, Ga-Rankuwa, Alexandra, Vaal, Tembisa and Katlehong.

The Kings of Flava Yase Kasi in all these townships will compete for the Kings of Flava Yase Kasi Gauteng and the ultimate Flava Yase Kasi winner for the whole of Gauteng will be awarded the grand prize of R30 000.

Kasi Flava took the involvement of soccer legends such as Doctor Khumalo and Shakes Gwabeni to be a success. It reminded most about the street soccer games that are usually played in our townships.

Shakes Gwabeni said that, while he was working with these different teams, he has spotted a lot of talent that needs to be nurtured.

“There are good players in our townships, they just need our support and motivation. We need our professional teams to come and scout, because the fact that they are not being recognised, kills their spirit and makes them lose hope and thus they give up in soccer,” said Gwabeni.

The Soweto tournament consisted of 20 teams, from different areas, Pimville, Dlamini, Meadowlands, Chiawelo, Phiri, Rockville and Molapo.

Pimville Premier Impala was the only team from Pimville that participated in the tournament, the boys did pretty well but unfortunately, the competition was tough and there had to be one winner.
