Local swimmers to swim the waters of Italy

If you would like to contribute to the trip or if you would like to know more about the Superfins Swimming Club, you can contact the club's manager Naseema Venter.

Italy will be hosting a Tri-Colour International Games from July 7 to July 14. The game is an amateur sporting event which focuses on six sporting codes namely athletics, basketball, football, netball, rugby and swimming.

The competition is open to athletes between the ages of 13 and 17 years old from countries all over the world. Zinadeen Scheepers (15) from Eldorado Park and Daniel Billings (15) from Coronationville will be both joining the group of swimmers who have been selected to go represent South Africa in Italy.

Both of these local swimmers belong to the Superfins Swimming Club in Coronationville. Naseema Venter who is the manager of the club will be accompanying the two swimmers to Italy in July.

The manager told us that the two swimmers are both Level 3 swimmers which is the highest local level for swimmers.

According to Billings, they had to go through the district and regional competitions and there they were selected to compete at the provincial games which were the OR Tambo Soncini Social Cohesion Games last year in October. Billings has been swimming with the club four years ago.

“I just do sprints and middle-distance swimming. That is 50 to 100 meters and the middle distance is 400 to 800 meters. During summer I train six days a week and in winter its five days and we are required to swim 4km every day for the club,” said Billings.

When asked how he feels about being selected to represent the country, the swimmer said: “I’m very nervous, I don’t want to let the team down so that’s why I’m training harder, not to make myself just proud but everyone that I’m representing.”

The young swimmer said that his former coach Ramon Coutriers is his motivation. Before the swimmers leave there will be a training camp where the swimmers will regroup and then they will fly to Italy on July 5.
