Construction of state-of-the-art sports facility in Soweto nears completion

The hi-tech facility is expected to boost tourism and employment for Sowetans

Soweto will soon be boasting one of the top sporting complexes in Gauteng as the construction of a R34-million multipurpose sports arena is about to be completed in Klipspruit.

The arena will be just a few metres down the road from the Nike Stadium and Maponya Mall. This will also boost Maponya Mall and the Nike Stadium as visitors are expected to flock to the sports arena.

The sporting facility is the first of its kind in Gauteng and will cater to the needs of athletes and coaches in a variety of sports disciplines. It will offer a lot of healthy recreation ahead of this winter, and will feature two outdoor basketball and netball courts, a children’s water splash pond, basketball-oriented area and a whole lot of space in which sports junkies can keep fit.

Other high-tech features include digital scoreboards, and a number of sustainable technologies such as state-of-the-art energy efficient heating, ventilation, cooling systems and low water consumption sanitary fittings.

The sports complex is the fourth phase of the Nancefield Station Precinct project and will bring development opportunities that will attract private sector investment. The transit-oriented development with Nancefield Train Station as a focal point and safe, walkable environment is critical. This also means employment for residents and may attract tourists.

Project management is key for such projects and the project oversight was done by member of parliament, Tsepo Mhlongo on May 14. The construction of the sporting facility is almost complete and will be launched soon. After school and school holidays will never be the same for kids not only in Klipspruit, but Soweto on the whole.
