#Local-sport: Legends in the making

We took a closer look at our local sports stars.

In soccer, the term underdog refers to the team that is often underestimated and seen as easy pickings. Many such underrated teams have tipped the scales in their favour and beaten highly rated teams.

Francois Kemp and two other owners, Brandon Agulhus and Franklin Rabie, started a team with players from several teams to create a legendary team.

Legends Football Club (LFC) started in 2015 and only had a U12 team in the first season. Now, the club boasts U10s, U12s, U14s and their senior league team.

Last sea In their debut season last year, the team caused a serious upset as they finished third on the log.

Kemp said, “This time around, we are more than ready to go all the way and take the league. Although we need to overcome the challenges we experienced last season and that is too many draws, which ultimately cost us the league.”

Kemp is hoping to make it different this season with more victories.

He said, “With a team like ours with the youngest chairman, we never thought we would make it. From being just two idealistic guys to becoming the league title contenders, in just two years.”

They also have two other coaches who coach the juniors, Claremont Isaacs and Devandre Cornelius. They have a total of 78 players across all divisions.

LFC has players who are extremely proud of being a part of their team.

The seniors captain, Trasvent Theunis said, “For the new season I feel we can take the league because of the work that we put in.”

Defender Thabiso Maas said, “It is an unusual feeling but for me, it is not easy being a part of this team. There are many teams in Eldos, but this team is purpose driven.”

Kicking off their first game of the season LFC played The Boys FC (TBFC) who are coached by Adiel Van Stavel. The first half was relatively quiet, but LFC managed to get a goal out of it.

Paul Radebe scored the first goal of the match with a spectacular flick over the goalkeeper after he received the ball from a through a pass.

Before Keagan Moses scored the second goal of the match, a goal was disallowed. No one was quite sure why the goal was disallowed but a retake was called.

Radebe took the free-kick from the right-hand side just outside the box and squared it into the box. Moses headed the ball into the bottom left corner as he squeezed it through the post and goalkeeper.

After the second goal, LFC’s confidence increased and they raised the pressure. Moses took a promising shot at goal but unfortunately, it bounced back into play after it hit the crossbar.

More shots at goal followed as Phillepino De Lange also hit the crossbar from what could have been a goal. LFC secured their first win in the first game of the season by a 2-0 margin.
