Soweto: Not just fun and games for Ekasi eSports

Ekasi eSports is a professional gaming organisation.

Ekasi Esports is the first sports club in Soweto to have successfully applied for a membership to the Mind Sports South Africa (MSSA) programme, which is an affiliate of the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee.

According MSSA general secretary, Colin Webster, “MSSA is in control of promoting board games such as backgammon, diplomacy, checkers, draughts and Morabaraba, as well as card games and eSports, whether they are played on cellular phones, consoles and personal computers, even robotics and historical figure games also known as wargames.”

Ekasi eSports is a professional gaming organisation that aims to break the boundaries in terms of the inclusion of other young individuals from certain areas and use schools as the gateway to ensuring that a majority of the youth takes part in the games.

Gabriel Ramokotjo of Ekasi eSports explained that their club would be hosting a workshop in Orlando East at Emadwaleni High School.

He said, “The workshop aims to highlight the aspects of education in the gaming industry, and the word ‘gamification’ was coined for it.

“This will expose the opportunities in the gaming industry. People can be professionals in this industry and earn a salary while representing South Africa in gaming competitions across the globe.”

One of the coaches of explained that their aim was to educate and to introduce the programme to schools to share insights on how more could be done in the gaming industry as well as the skills which could be acquired through participation.

Gosa said, “Being registered with MSSA is a big achievement for us and we look back at our challenges and trials and we smile proudly.”

Webster said, “Ramokotjo, Gosa and their partner, Mpho Tladi are determined to see eSports to become a viable alternative to other sports in Soweto, and are driven to bring the technological advantages associated with eSports into Soweto in order to benefit the lives of all.”
