Soccer legends Pollen “Trompies” Ndlanya and Thabo “Jaman” Mngomeni were impressed at the level of football during the Gauteng Championships final held at the Congo Soccer Grounds in Dobsonville.

According to Ndlanya, soccer lovers from the townships grew up playing five-a-side street soccer on the dusty streets and has spawned innumerable soccer legends who have gone on to grace the world stage.

“It is fulfilling that such initiatives are finally being acknowledged through the Smirnoff RagaBolo soccer tournament.

“It inspires patrons to drink responsibly and remain active while playing their favourite sport and gets fans to interact with soccer legends who they often only get to see from afar, ” added Ndlanya.

He said that the incredible soccer prowess displayed by participants in the Smirnoff RagaBolo tournament was of rare quality in the modern Premier Soccer League (PSL) and added that the PSL was blessed with talented soccer stars such as the likes of Jabu Pule, Thabo Mooki and Steve “Chippa” Lekolea who were a marvel to watch in their prime.

The matches had players pulling out all the stops.

“Today’s footballers in the PSL play direct football. I have been impressed with the footballing skills displayed by players in this tournament.

“They are being allowed to showcase both flair and skill which is more entertaining,” said Ndlanya.

He applauded the fact that over the past four years, the tournament standard has been steadily reaching higher standards.

Families came in large numbers to watch the five-a-side Smirnoff soccer tournaments on the streets everywhere they went.

“They brought their camp chairs and drank their favourite drinks while watching entertaining soccer matches.

“I urge all participants to drink responsibly and to continue playing the game of billions,” he concluded.
