Maluleke puts Soweto on the map at riding competition

Maluleke beat the township trend of wanting to be a soccer star and opted to be different from his peers.

The Soweto-born Musa Maluleke participated in the Nissan Winter Classic show-jumping event again this year at the Durban Shongweni Club that started on the 14th and ended on June 18.

Born in Dube, Maluleke started riding at the age of seven years at the SPCA after developing an interest in the sport.

“I fell in love with the sport and I decided that this is the route I wanted to take with my career.”

He started competing professionally at the age of 16 and now at 23 will be competing again this year.

As the event is growing very fast and is slowly gaining popularity, the show jumping will be the main attraction this year.

This year’s prize reward was R480 000 and there were 300 local and international riders and horses.

It’s not just about show jumping, but it was a family affair, with children’s activities in a marked kids zone as well as gymnastic and trapeze displays.

Adults were also be entertained; besides the show jumping, they were able to take advantage of the several extra activities such as the test drive and vehicle display.

Grant Langley, the organiser said, “the growth that this event has enjoyed since its inception in 2011 has been phenomenal.

“It was started with the idea that equestrian sport should be accessible to all, and this ethos has enabled its rapid and deserved expansion.”

Maluleke said he’s expecting to achieve big this year and is planning, praying and hoping that this is his best year.

“For young people who would love to start riding, they can go to the riding school in Rockville to see what it’s all about,” said Maluleke.
