Orlando AC ready to conquer Comrades

Local athletes are all fired up and ready to represent Soweto in the ultimate human race.

Athletes belonging to the Orlando Athletics Club are ready to take on one of the biggest road marathon in the world, the Comrades Marathon.

A total of 64 runners from the Orlando East based club will run from Durban to Pietermaritzburg on Sunday this weekend.

Since the club’s formation 20 years ago, this is the highest number of athletes it has ever sent to the Comrades. Zandi Shabangu will be running the marathon for the first time this year.

This is a historic moment for Shabangu as an athlete who will be joining her counterparts from other parts of the world.

Apart from the runners who will be on the road representing the club and the whole of Soweto, an Orlando AC stand will be seen at the marathon as well.

“Our tent and gazebo will be situated at Drummond which is halfway mark or 44km to the finish line and a club tent site has already been set up at the finish in Pietermaritzburg,” said Sibongile Maruta from the club.

Orlando AC athletes have worked really hard preparing for the ultimate humane race at the Comrade is sometimes called.

Jabulani Nkuna will be doing it for the third time this year and he is looking to beat his last years’ time which was 10:20:33.

Once again, the club’s very own legend Richard Mnisi will make Soweto proud after doing it 12 times. The blind athletes have recorded the best time of 07:45 and he is a silver medallist.
